What Is a Dress Form, and How Is It Different from a Mannequin?

A dress form is a three-dimensional model of the human torso used by designers, tailors, and sewists to drape, fit, and construct garments. Unlike mannequins—typically used for display in retail—dress forms are working tools built for functionality in garment making.

Why all the confusion?

Historically, the term "mannequin" was used to describe various forms of models—ranging from an artist's doll, a tailor's model, to the dressmaker's fitting tool. Over time, however, these terms have evolved, with the mannequin now being primarily associated with retail display and the dress form taking on a more specialized role in garment creation and fitting. 

Differences in Construction

Most mannequins are made of plastic and wood and are lightweight to be easily transported. Many have movable limbs to hold different poses. They are typically long and slender and look more similar to an avatar rather than a person. They are not pinnable(cannot hold a pin) and are not great tools to create/alter clothing. 

Dressforms are made in a variety of manners. Some start off with a plastic or paper mache core and are covered in cloth. This method results in non-pinnable to semi-pinnable dressforms that are standard sized. Others are created using a solid foam core and covered in fabric and are fully-pinnable. This ability to drape and pin onto dressforms help the user make/alter clothing items as they wish!

Ways to Avoid Confusion

We (at BespokeForms) believe that the nomenclature for "dress forms" should be changed to "dressforms". While not a conventional word yet, words become convectional through usage. The separation between "dress" and "forms" is detrimental for 2 reasons: confusion and key words. For those not in the sewing world, say we create "dress forms" has them believing that we create dresses and adds to confusion. In addition, this separation makes tags and keywords more difficult to find accurate searches for dressforms. Searches often result in dresses for sale and unrelated search results.
